Many times in our training it isn’t the big moves or the really huge efforts that create the biggest improvements. It could instead be the small, every day changes that we make that create the most significant differences.
For example, getting up 10 minutes earlier doesn’t seem like a very big difference, but if you put that extra 10 minutes towards a useful purpose, like going out for your morning run earlier, it could add up to bigger improvements in your running, especially if you start to increase your running distances.
One of the changes I made recently was going to bed 15 minutes earlier. Again, it’s not that big of a difference. But, it certainly has me feeling much more rested. Even on those days I don’t work, I go to bed around the same time. I can’t promise I get up as early on my days off, but I certainly don’t oversleep. I have a lot more energy and don’t feel as if I’m sleepwalking through the day.
Another little change I made was to stop going to the grocery store every time I had a whim for something. OK, this is perhaps a bigger thing than a little change, but it does fit here. I do have the bad habit of running to the grocery store when I have a craving to make something for myself, regardless of what I already have at home. It’s both a waste of money and usually adds to a big calorie gain I don’t need. By stopping this, it creates a massive gain for my financially and a nice little weight loss gain.
If you string together enough of these little changes, they do add up to Big Gains and huge successes! Think of the little things that you can do to make your running, health and life easier, better, healthier. It’s not that difficult to do one or two little changes.
