Last year at Thanksgiving, I took the day off so I could participate in the San Francisco Turkey Trot Race I do every year. I work in a clinic that’s open 365 days a year. We don’t get holidays off, so if a holiday lands on a workday during our shift, we have to schedule that day off far ahead of time. I made sure to take it off, but I knew I couldn’t run the race.
The Turkey Trot I do has two race distances. The 5-mile is the regular race. You get your picture taken and your time counts. It’s the Turkey Trail Trot. There is also a shorter 3-mile race, called the Pilgrim’s Promenade you can do if you don’t want to do the whole 5 miles and if you’re a walker. You don’t get your picture taken and your time doesn’t count. They are both fun.
There are also shorter races for the little kids and each child gets a special goody bag.
It raises money for the Lowell High School Track Team. The high school band plays before the races as well.
So, last year, I did the Pilgrim’s Promenade because I couldn’t run. Walking 3 miles was hard, but I did it. And it was fun, in spite of the pain.
This year, I’m running the Turkey Trail Trot!
I am grateful to be able to run, to be in good health and to be able to enjoy my favorite holiday!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
